Progress continues on the cultural
center with a tower dome being hoisted atop Historic All Saints on February 4th.
The dome was constructed off site by Dallas Construction in De Soto and transported to Stuart last week. The dome is 6.8 ft. in height,
13.4 ft. in diameter, weighting 4,000 lbs. and covered with 500 sq. ft. of
copper.
Construction of the roof is almost complete and a decision will be made in
the near future whether to install concrete tiles or asphalt roofing. Sheet
metal workers have been fabricating copper cornices to trim the roofline of
the building, giving it the same appearance of the original copper.
Completion is set for late fall of 2009. The reconstruction of the building
has been running just about one hundred years later from the original
construction which started in 1908 and was dedicated in 1910.
Project Restore is working with architects Kirk Blunk and Jeff Wagner of
HLKB Architecture in Des Moines, a firm known for its work on historic
buildings. The general contractor is Koester Construction of Grimes.
